One bench, one maker, no production line
Every piece is cut from a single hide on the mat in the photograph, skived thin where it folds, punched and then stitched by hand -- two needles, one thread, seven stitches to the inch. A machine does the same seam in a minute and it fails at the first broken stitch; a saddle stitch does not unravel.
Which is why the goods are made to order in the week after you buy, and why there are three of them rather than thirty.
From the hide to your door
Cut
The pattern traced onto the hide and cut with a knife, the best of the grain kept for the face of the piece.
Skive
Thinned by hand at every fold and seam, so the bag bends where it should and nowhere else.
Stitch
Punched and saddle-stitched with two needles, seven stitches to the inch, every seam by hand.
Finish
Edges bevelled, dyed and burnished, the brass set, and the piece posted tracked within the week.
